Farmhouse Landscaping Ideas in Lahore: Lawns, Orchards, Driveways and More

Before any grass is laid, divide the land into zones based on how you will actually use it. A clear master plan saves money because irrigation, electrical and drainage lines can be laid once instead of dug up later.

Agricultural land around Lahore is usually flat, but rarely level enough for a good lawn, and the topsoil can be compacted from years of farming or mixed with construction debris once the house is built. Laser levelling or careful manual levelling gives the lawn an even surface and a gentle slope so rainwater runs off instead of pooling.

Some plots, especially in low-lying areas, flood during heavy monsoon rains. Plan surface drains along driveways, soakaway pits or a connection to an outlet, and raise building plinths and key paths slightly above the surrounding ground. It is far cheaper to shape the land correctly at the start than to fix waterlogged lawns every August.

Before planting, test or at least inspect the soil. Heavy clay benefits from sand and organic matter; salty or alkaline patches, which are not unusual in parts of Punjab, may need gypsum and good leaching. Adding well-rotted farmyard manure across lawn and bed areas gives new planting a strong start.

Many farmhouses host mehndis, dholkis and family functions, so the main lawn needs to survive heavy foot traffic and marquee setups. Hardy warm-season grass such as Bermuda or a well-established Dhaka grass lawn recovers far better than delicate varieties. Aerate and top-dress the lawn after large events, and give it a few weeks to recover before the next big gathering. Proper soil preparation, levelling and drainage matter more than the grass type itself.

Keep the event lawn free of trees in the middle, but plan shade trees and seating around the edges. Add hidden electrical points and water points along the lawn perimeter so caterers and decorators do not have to run cables across the grass.

An orchard gives a farmhouse character and something to look forward to each season. In Lahore's climate, citrus (kinnow, mosambi, lemon), guava, mango, jaman, falsa and pomegranate generally do well. Plant them in rows with bubbler or drip irrigation, and leave enough spacing for tractors or maintenance access.

A small kitchen garden near the house, with seasonal vegetables and herbs, is easy to maintain and popular with families. Raised beds make it tidier and easier to water.

For colour, plan flowering trees and shrubs that peak in different seasons: Amaltas and Gulmohar in early summer, bougainvillea through the hot months, and seasonal annuals such as petunias, pansies and calendula in winter beds. Winter is the showpiece season for most Lahore farmhouses, so it pays to prepare beds in October and November.

A thick boundary plantation gives privacy, blocks dust from nearby roads and fields, and softens the hot westerly winds. A mix of fast-growing trees with a dense hedge in front, such as Conocarpus alternatives, Ficus or Duranta, works better than a single row of one species.

Gazebos, pergolas and covered seating near the lawn become the most-used spots on the property. Place them where they catch the evening breeze and look across the main lawn or a water feature.

Most farmhouse use happens in the evening, so lighting is essential. Uplight key trees, light the driveway with bollards or pole lights, and add warm lights around seating areas. Because farmhouses often face long power cuts, keep critical lighting on the generator or solar system.

A pond, fountain or small waterfall near the seating area cools the air and adds sound. Keep it close enough to the house to be enjoyed and maintained.

Most farmhouses rely on a tubewell. Rather than flood irrigating the whole property, use rotors or pop-ups for lawns, drip for beds and hedges and bubblers for orchards. A storage tank with a booster pump gives steadier pressure than running sprinklers directly from the tubewell. Solar pumps can significantly reduce running costs where there is enough roof or ground space for panels.
